Hjørnet youth club in Roskilde, Denmark
The Hjørnet youth club in the municipality of Roskilde in Denmark was built nine years ago, but its façade was not strong enough to withstand the impacts from the ball games that club members were always playing, and the club was constantly replacing damaged panels. The local council is now hoping to completely avoid this not inconsiderable expense by changing to more robust façade panels.
The Hjørnet youth club was carefully designed by architects, but because of the damaged cladding, it ended up looking tired and shabby after just a few years. That’s why, two years ago, the Roskilde local council initiated a dialogue with Steni in the hope of finding a solution that would allow the building to retain its character and appearance. Sabina Holstein, architect and advisor for the Roskilde local council explains that they wanted to maintain the fresh look of the modern building so that it would not fall in value, and it was a big problem that the original fibre cement cladding was not designed for ball games.

By replacing the cladding on the Hjørnet youth club, the lifetime of the façade has been increased by 20 to 60 years.
“Yes, the Steni panels cost a little more, but when you take the longer lifetime and reduced maintenance costs into account, the total cost is less. Unfortunately it is not always financially feasible to choose exactly what you want, but we definitely know which materials we would prefer to use on our buildings. The Hjørnet youth club has had its new Steni Colour façade for over three years now, and with the cladding we had before, we would probably already have had to replace a number of panels.”
“I am very pleased with the work on the Hjørnet youth club. The façade’s original strong appearance has been retained, but the panels have been replaced. I am looking forward to seeing how the new façade stands up over the next few years. We have had similar work done at another of the municipality’s buildings, but with a different type of panel, and in a few years we should be able to see whether there is a difference,” says Sabina Holstein.
